Hi! I'm Bennet

and this is my personal blog

How you can safe water, money and time

Here is a tip for you, how you can safe water, money and time.

I’m a person which loves the shower. Usually I take a shower every second day and when I say, I loves the shower, it means that I’m showering for 15+ minutes. I love that feeling when the warm water pattering on my back. This feeling let me feel good and I get creative. Yeah, under the shower I get the best ideas of everything…birthday presents, solutions for any kind of problems, things that I can try… And that’s the reason it takes so long to get me out of it.

But If you showering like me, 15+ minutes you consume so much water, that isn’t great for your money pocket and for the environment.

Calculate your water consumption

The is a simple formula to calculate how much water you are using in one shower session.

60 x filling volume : seconds until the volume is full = flow rate per minute

It’s simpel, I will explain.

The first number “60” stands for 60 seconds = 1 minute.
That will be multiplied by the second parameter: the filling volume of your bucket.
And that will be divided by the third value: the time how long it takes until your bucket is full.

So if I have a 10 liter bucket and it takes 40 seconds to fill it, then I have a flow rate per minute of: 15 liters

60 x 10 : 40 = 15

If my shower session takes 15 minutes, then I consume 225 (!) liter of water ( 15 minutes x 15 liters per minute ). That’s huge!

My system to reduce water consumption

So I decided to change something about that. There are some products out there, which will help you to save water. For example a little “thing” that will reduce flow rate, but keeps the pressure. I don’t use such a product, for now, but what I did, I reduced step by step my showering time.

That’s a simple step, that will safe water, money and time!

I know me, if I do a hard break and switch immediately from 15 minutes to 5 minutes per shower session, I will not keep it up for a long time.

But I tried an other system: Every month I reduce my showering time by one minute.

First of all, it’s necessary that you have a timer/clock in your bathroom. Such a small thing changed my behavior – I didn’t used it before, but you should use it to.

I did a “hard” cut and started with 10 minutes in January. After 5 months in Mai, my showering time is now at 6 minutes. My goal is 5 minutes. So next month (June), I reached my goal and then is important to keep it up!

When I’m keep calculating: 5 minutes x 15 liters per minute = 75 liter

That’s a reduction of round about 66,67 % !

Through the gradual time reduction, I have used to doing everything in a shorter time and not wasting so much time. And there is still time to just stand there and enjoy that feeling of the warm water that is pattering on my back.

Eventually someone get inspired of this post.

What do you think about that?
